Going Bananas
by Candy Lawrence

After downing a hit of potassium from that banana you just ate, don’t toss the peel into the garbage. It’ll come in handy later on when you want to polish your riding boots or throw a mirrored sheen on other leathers. Rub the inside of the peel on your boots, allow to dry and buff with a soft cloth or paper towel while removing any white banana residue that remains. Standard boot polish is often filled with chemical toxins. Using a banana peel on your boots is not only better for your health but it’s equally better for the environment.

Top athletes will attest to the health benefits of this tropical fruit. Research has shown that two bananas provide over an hour-and-a-half of sustained energy which comes in handy whether you’re galloping cross country or practicing reining patterns in the pasture. Bananas also contain tryptophan, a protein that the body converts into serotine which can be a magical fix when you’re headed into the show ring making you more relaxed, focused, improving your mood and reducing stress thereby giving you the competitive edge. Pack a banana before you leave for the next show or event. Not only will your leather shine, but your mind and body will, too.
